Lanky pace bowler Morne Morkel has today become the sixth South African bowler to achieve the feat of 250 test wickets. Morkel reached the landmark earlier today in the third test between New Zealand and South Africa in Hamilton- his 74th test for the Proteas.
Only five South African bowlers have achieved this feat before Morkel- Shaun Pollock, Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini, Allan Donald and Jacques Kallis. Overtaking Kallis (291) and perhaps Donald (330) will be his next target, but Morne is already 32 and with South Africa’s quota system likely to have a spot for only one of him and Dale Steyn in the test XI, that feat looks unlikely.
The same test also saw New Zealand’s Kane Williamson become the fastest Black Cap to reach 5,000 test runs.
